Chandigarh to Solarize Government Buildings

Highlights:

  • CREST has identified 48 government buildings to install solar power plants
  • Chandigarh administration has set a deadline of achieving 75 MW solar capacity by the end of this year, and 100 MW by 2025.

The Chandigarh administration plans to expand the use of government buildings for setting up solar power plants.

In a recent survey conducted by the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST), 48 buildings within the city were identified as suitable locations for the installation of solar power plants. Once operational, these plants are projected to generate an impressive 1600 kWp of solar power, significantly contributing to the region’s clean energy capacity.

“CREST had carried out a detailed survey of all the government buildings which are feasible for installation of SPV Power Plants having capacity more than 10 kWp. A total capacity of 885kWp can be installed on the 26 government buildings under Chandigarh Administration and 705kWp at 22 of buildings under Municipal Corporation with capacity ranging from 10kWp to 95kWp,” said an official.

CREST’s ambitious plans also include the setup of canal-top solar power plants, with proposed capacities of 4 MW near the Botanical Garden on Patiala ki Rao, 2 MW behind the Dadumajra dumping ground on Patiala Ki Rao, and an additional 2 MW on N-Choe near Garden of Conifers in Sector 52.

Furthermore, two floating power plants, each boasting a capacity of 2.5 MW, are slated for installation at the Sector 39 water works, while a 1 MW power plant will soon find its home near the DT Mall in Chandigarh IT Park.

The union territory plans to make a full shift to renewable energy for city-wide power demand by 2030.

To achieve the target, CREST is diligently preparing a detailed renewable energy plan and a strategic ‘road map’ for the next seven years. This roadmap will incorporate key elements such as solar plant locations, available renewable options, cutting-edge technologies, cost estimates, and other essential factors.

As of now, Chandigarh has an installed solar capacity of 56 MW, with supplementary contributions from various other renewable sources. The average electricity demand of the city is around 300 MW. Moreover, Chandigarh has a deadline of 75 MW capacity by the end of this year, and 100 MW by 2025.
