The MNRE has launched a ₹2.3 crore Startup Innovation Challenge to boost rooftop solar (RTS) and distributed renewable energy (DRE) in India. Announced on June 21, 2025, the initiative seeks innovative solutions focused on affordability, resilience, inclusivity, and sustainability.
Startups from diverse sectors, including green tech, IoT, AI, blockchain, construction, energy hardware, fintech, and waste management, are eligible to apply for the challenge. The initiative encourages cross-sector innovation to strengthen India’s clean energy ecosystem through scalable rooftop solar and distributed renewable energy (DRE) solutions.
The program offers a prize pool of ₹2.3 crore, comprising ₹1 crore for the first prize, ₹50 lakh for the second prize, ₹30 lakh for the third prize, and 10 consolation prizes of ₹5 lakh each. In addition to financial support, winners will receive incubation assistance, pilot deployment opportunities, and mentorship from industry experts and investors, coordinated by the MNRE and the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE).
Entry submissions are open via the StartUp India portal, with a firm deadline of August 20, 2025, and winners scheduled to be announced on September 10, 2025. This push comes as India celebrates surpassing 100 GW of solar capacity, with rooftop solar becoming a critical factor in the nation’s push toward the 500 GW renewables target by 2030.
By launching this comprehensive programme, the government aims not only to boost rooftop solar adoption but also to cultivate a vibrant ecosystem of startups bringing scalable, sustainable, and inclusive clean‑energy innovations to the market.
