India has reached a historic milestone, surpassing 100 GW of installed solar power capacity, solidifying its status as a global renewable energy leader. This achievement underscores the nation’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future and marks a crucial step toward its ambitious goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.

The country initially targeted 175 GW of renewable energy, including 100 GW of solar, by 2022. However, the pandemic’s impact and lockdown restrictions delayed its achievement.

“Initiatives like solar panels, solar parks and rooftop solar projects have brought about revolutionary changes. As a result, today India has successfully achieved the target of 100 GW of solar energy production. In the field of green energy, India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also showing the world a new path,” said Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.

The minister highlighted that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is transforming rooftop solar into a household reality, empowering homes with clean energy. India’s solar capacity has surged 35 times in a decade, from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025.

As of January 31, 2025, India’s total solar capacity installed capacity stands at 100.33 GW, with 84.10 GW under implementation and an additional 47.49 GW under tendering.

Solar energy continues to drive India’s renewable growth, contributing 47% of the total installed capacity. In 2024, a record 24.5 GW of solar capacity was added.

Last year, 18.5 GW of utility-scale solar capacity was installed—a 2.8x increase from 2023. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh led the way, significantly contributing to India’s total utility-scale solar capacity.

India’s rooftop solar sector saw impressive growth in 2024, with 4.59 GW of new capacity installed—a 53% increase from 2023. A major catalyst was the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024, which is now approaching 9 lakh rooftop installations, empowering households nationwide with clean energy.

India has made remarkable progress in solar manufacturing, expanding its module production capacity from 2 GW in 2014 to 60 GW in 2024. With strong policy support, the country is on track to reach 100 GW of solar module production by 2030, according to the ministry.
