In partnership with IIT (Mumbai), the Indian Army developed its first green solar energy plant in northern Sikkim, which has 56 KVA capacity.
Helping its troops working in remote conditions, the Indian Army has recently launched the first green solar energy plant in North Sikkim with the help of IIT Mumbai. The power plant is situated at the height of 16000 ft. in the northern part of the state, which has 56 KVA capacity. For energy storage purposes, vanadium-based battery technology is used in this plant.
Lt. Col P. Khongsai, Public Relation Officer (Defence) Guwahati, stated, “The project was commissioned in collaboration with IIT Mumbai.”
Professor of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, Mr. Prakash Ghosh led a team of eminent faculty from the Institute to worked alongside the troops of the Indian Army to complete the project while dealing with extreme climatic conditions. With its environment-friendly nature, this plant will be beneficial to the army personnel who work in forwarding areas under a challenging climate.
On April 22, 2021, the Indian Army celebrated Earth Day & Lieutenant General C Bansi Ponnappa, General Officer Commanding, Vajra Corps at Jalandhar Cantonment inaugurated 1 MW of solar power plant. This 1 MW of solar power plant was the result of the Go Green initiative of the Army.
Indian Army is focusing on sustainable development. This project is dedicated to Military hospitals. This project is installed over the 5-acre land & the cost of the entire project is 5.16 crore. The plant is expected to produce at least 15 lakh units of electricity annually or about 1.25 lakh units per month, which will amount to an approximate saving of Rs 1 crore per year to the government exchequer.
As we know that everyone respects the Indian Army, so if they are adopting solar, this might increase the solar energy-based awareness in society.
