India’s Total Installed Solar Capacity Reaches 72.02 GW

Highlights:

  • India’s total solar capacity crosses 72 GW, with the leading solar states being Rajasthan and Gujarat
  • The government has also sanctioned 50 solar park projects in 12 states with a total capacity of 37.4 GW

Union Minister R.K Singh has informed Rajya Sabha that India’s installed solar capacity has reached 72.02 GW. The breakdown of this capacity is as follows:

  • Ground Mounted Solar: 55.71 GW
  • Rooftop Solar: 11.08 GW
  • Off Grid Solar: 2.55 GW
  • Solar Component from Hybrid Projects: 2.68 GW

The state-wise data presented in the assembly showed that solar power capacity has witnessed significant growth since 2019-20 with significant contributions from Gujarat, Karnataka, and Rajasthan.

Private sector investments in solar were a major driving force for this increase.

As of 31st October 2023, the leading solar states are Rajasthan (18 GW) and Gujarat (10.4 GW)

The Indian government is also providing higher financial support in north-eastern states under the Rooftop solar and PM Kusum schemes. The union government also has a nationwide solar subsidy to promote the adoption of clean energy in the residential sector.

For the financial year, 2023-2024, India has allocated a total sum of ₹5,917.25 crore for solar energy in the budget. The government is also committed to a target of developing at least 50 Solar Parks with a cumulative capacity of 40,000 MW.

The Rajya Sabha was informed that as of 31st October 2023, 50 Solar parks with an aggregate capacity of 37,490 MW have already been sanctioned in 12 states. 9 solar parks with a total capacity of 8276 MW were sanctioned in Rajasthan, and 8 solar parks with a capacity of 4180 MW were sanctioned in Madhya Pradesh.

The two other states with a large number of sanctioned solar park capacities were Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
