Highlights:

  • MSEDCL aims to install rooftop solar plants in 3 million homes, under the new Surya ghar scheme
  • The state government has defined region-wise solar targets and is ramping up consumer awareness efforts to achieve the goal.

The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) is aiming to install rooftop solar plants in 3 million (30 lakh) homes, under the new PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

The state government has instructed officials to prioritize technical feasibility approvals and meter testing. MSEDCL is also taking the necessary steps to raise consumer awareness about solar through camps, advertising, and social media campaigns.

Moreover, Maharashtra has set rooftop solar targets for different locations. The region-wise targets are as follows:
  • Konkan Region: 934,600 solar homes
  • Nagpur region: 892,500 solar homes
  • Pune Region: 765,400 solar homes
  • Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar Region: 407,500 solar homes

All the selected regions include 47 circles in 16 zones and a total of 22.43 million households.

In February 2024, the Indian prime minister launched the Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana with a target of installing rooftop solar in 1 crore households. Under the scheme, the solar subsidy has also been raised.

Now, for 1-2kW rooftop solar power systems, consumers can claim a subsidy of ₹30,000/kW. For a 2-3kW plant, an additional subsidy of ₹18,000/kW will be available. Finally, for systems exceeding 3kW, a fixed subsidy of ₹78,000 will be provided.
