The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced the guidelines for the ‘Model Solar Village’ scheme under PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, allocating ₹800 crore to develop solar villages across all districts in India. Each selected village will receive ₹1 crore to enhance its solar energy infrastructure.
The initiative aims to establish one Model Solar Village per district to boost solar energy adoption and self-sufficiency. To qualify for the scheme, villages must be recognized revenue villages with populations exceeding 5,000 or 2,000 in special category states.
The ministry indicates that the selection process will be competitive, based on the renewable energy (RE) capacity installed six months after the District Level Committee announces potential candidates.
The top-performing village in each district, based on installed RE capacity, will receive ₹1 crore in central financial assistance. The State/UT Renewable Energy Development Agency, under DLC supervision, will implement the scheme to transform selected villages into model solar-powered communities.
This development is part of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, approved by the Government of India on February 29, 2024. With a ₹75,021 crore budget, the scheme aims to expand solar rooftop capacity and enable residential households to generate their own electricity by the fiscal year 2026-27, advancing India’s renewable energy goals.
