The Pune Zilla Parishad is rolling out a major clean energy initiative to transform 3,284 Anganwadi centers into Harit Anganwadis—green, energy-efficient child care centers—using rooftop solar systems. Out of 4,395 centers serving 1.29 lakh children, this transition aims to reduce dependence on unreliable power from gram panchayats and cut electricity costs significantly.
Each rooftop solar system has a capacity of 1 kW, with an estimated cost of approximately ₹1 lakh per installation. Together, this brings the total investment to around ₹33 crore for the initial 3,284 Anganwadis. For the remaining 985 centers, Pune ZP has proposed securing an additional ₹10 crore in funding. Currently, 2,300 centers are being covered under CSR partnerships, and the remainder will be funded from a 3 percent allocation of the Women and Child Welfare Department’s budget.
A 1 kW solar rooftop system typically generates about 1,400 to 1,600 units of electricity annually, meaning each Anganwadi could save around 3,300 to 3,700 units per year. This consistent energy output will support lighting, fans, and basic appliances during power outages, ensuring uninterrupted services and improving learning and nutrition programs for children.
This solar initiative is part of Pune ZP’s broader effort to establish model Harit Anganwadis, integrating clean energy with kitchen gardens, plantations, and upgraded infrastructure. The plan covers building resilience, boosting community health, and embedding sustainability into rural development.
