Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), the state-run utility company, is ready to float tenders for its first district-level solar park in Thiruvarur. The initiative is part of the state’s ambitious plan of building 20,000MW solar generation capacity by 2030. Tangedco plans to develop such projects in all districts of Tamil Nadu.
State Chief Minister M.K Stalin had earlier announced that multiple units with 4000MW capacity will be developed across Tamil Nadu. However, the final capacity of the solar park has not been revealed yet.
As part of this state-wide initiative, the district administrators have identified 6,333 acres of land to set up solar parks. Tangedco officials are now in the process of measuring the feasibility of these areas. The identified locations are as follows:
“A detailed project report has been prepared. The plan is to generate power locally to meet the demand of the respective districts. The funding pattern is being worked out, but the assets will be owned by Tangedco. About 3,200 acres of land have been granted ‘enter upon permission’ for the solar park scheme so far,” said V Senthil Balaji, Ministry of Electricity, Tamil Nadu.
The Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) target was recently revised to 43.3% by the Union Ministry. The RPO makes it compulsory for electricity distribution companies to produce or acquire renewable energy to meet a percentage of their energy demand by 2029-30.
To meet this RPO target, Tangedco will have to boost its solar capacity to 21,887MW, wind by 3650MW, and hydro by 2273MW. The current solar capacity of the state is 5572MW.
