Rajasthan has surpassed Karnataka as the leading state in solar installations as of the third quarter of the calendar year (CY) 2021. Total solar installations in the state were 8.2 GW at the end of September, with utility-scale projects accounting for 7.65 GW and rooftop installations accounting for 543 MW.
According to the study, Karnataka has 7.7 GW of cumulative installations at the end of September. Large-scale initiatives accounted for 7.4 GW of this total.
Rajasthan accounted for roughly 35% of large-scale installations in the first half of 2021, with 1.2 GW of power deployed.
Since 2018, Karnataka has been the leading solar state in the country, accounting for over 20% of all large-scale solar installations, followed by Rajasthan at 17%. With almost 5 GW of installed solar PV capacity, Karnataka surpassed Telangana to become the lead in 2018. Between 2017 and 2019, the state of Karnataka installed a considerable amount of solar capacity. However, the state has since witnessed little action, having surpassed its RPO target by 177%. The state, however, would remain one of the top locations for solar project construction, with the federal government estimating a solar potential of up to 25 GW in the state, coupled with strong agricultural and industrial power demand. One of the reasons for the decrease in installations has been landing availability.
Solar installations in Rajasthan were harmed by the second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, however, the year 2020 was far worse. Throughout the near future, over 3 GW of solar power projects connected to the interstate transmission system (ISTS) is scheduled to be commissioned on time in the state.
However, due to the Supreme Court’s judgment on the necessity to conserve the endangered Great Indian Bustard, whose habitat is in some of the project locations, forthcoming developments in Rajasthan may be delayed.
Approvals for new transmission infrastructure development have been halted as officials await Supreme Court directions on whether transmission lines should be built underground or overhead in the future.
In addition, the state is home to the world’s biggest solar park, the Bhadla Solar Park.
