NTPC-REL is planning to add 1.5 GW of RE capacity this year, stated the company CEO, Mr. Mohit Bhargava.

NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd is the wholly owned subsidiary of state-owned power company NTPC and was formed to expand the latter’s renewable energy portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint.

“Our target is to do 1.5 GW of renewable energy capacity this year and our capital expenditure will be about Rs 10,000 crore. This capex amount includes ongoing and under-construction projects, and also pipeline projects for next year,” he states.

Out of the targeted 1.5 GW, the company will develop 150 MW of wind projects and the remaining will be solar. Moreover, the wind capacity will only be developed as hybrid projects.

Additionally, NTPC REL aims to achieve 60 GW of solar capacity in the coming years and is currently working on 20 GW capacity.

Out of this 20 GW, 3.3 GW is operational, 7 GW is under construction and the company has to place orders for 10 GW capacity. “We are aiming that by 2026, a large part of this should be operational,” Mr. Bhargava explains.

The company is also exploring competitive energy storage options, including pumped and battery storage.

NTPC is making major strides to boost its solar energy portfolio. In December 2022, NTPC commissioned 240 MW of Devikot Solar Projects in Rajasthan and in August 2022, commissioned Gujarat’s 56 MW Kawas solar project.
